Okay, let's get to the meat! - Jill
~~~Search Engine Marketing Issues~~~
++Number of Words on a Page++
Dear Jill,
I have a customer who is convinced that for maximum SEO, the page length
must be between 450 and 625 words. He has a software program that tells him
this. Is there any truth to it?
Marte
++Jill's Response++
Hi Marte,
Well, if his software program told him that, then it must be true! (NOT!)
Those crazy SEO software programs never cease to amaze me with the stuff
they tell people. (See my previous article on that topic here:
<http://m1e.net/c?72318496-TTjAwl0.mnkjM%403040500-oJo4PrPHGLCDE
You can rest assured that there is absolutely, positively no specific number
of words that any given page needs to contain in order to gain highly
targeted search engine traffic. Every page is different, as it has
different needs and different target markets.
Your pages should be as long or as short as they need to be in order to say
what they need to say. The number of words on the page is not a search
engine issue at all, but a marketing issue. SEO can be performed on any
page regardless of its length because search engines know that it takes a
varying amount of words to get your point across.
Hope this helps!
Jill
++Duplicate Content Within Shopping Cart++
Hello Jill,
Thanks so much for the work that you do. I have a question that I am hoping
you can answer for me.
I have plain html pages that describe the various health-related products
that I recommend. If one of my readers wishes to purchase a product, they
click on an "order now" button, which takes them to the desired product at
my shopping cart.
The description for this product is quite similar on both of the pages
referenced above.
My question is this: In this scenario, do you know if I am in danger of
Google and other search engines viewing one of these pages as duplicate
content, and subsequently penalizing either of these pages?
Ben
++Jill's Response++
Hi Ben,
No need to worry about there being a problem with the scenario you describe.
A certain amount of duplicate content is normal and expected from any
website. The search engines don't penalize for stuff like that. They may
simply index and/or rank one of them over the other, but that's about it.
It's definitely not a big deal.
That said, because one has to click on the "add to cart" button to get to
the duplicate content pages, the search engines are probably not ever seeing
them anyway. Add-to-cart buttons generally use scripts to ensure that the
appropriate product is actually added to the shopping cart. Search engines
don't have the ability to process scripts (nor would they want to). Which
means you're doubly safe from any duplicate-content issues as far as the
search engines go.
In thinking further about this, I'm wondering why you actually need the
product description again once someone adds the item to the cart. You may
want to think about that some more, as it's probably not necessary to have
it there again anyway.
Best,
Jill
++Are SEO Conferences Worthwhile If You're Already #1?++
Dear Jill,
I really would like to go to a SEO conference someday, but which? I'm not an
SEO novice and PPC is not my strategy. Plus being #1 what could anybody
teach me, anyway? Now, I know that is a very stupid and dangerous statement.
;-) Future trends or expert hints very specific to my site are what I think
I need. What do you think?
Hilsen fra
Henrik
++Jill's Response++
Hello again Henrik,
I've found that even if you are very accomplished at SEO, the conferences
can be extremely beneficial. Nobody can know *everything* there is to know
(not even me!), and when you hear how others work, it can often be inspiring
and provide you with additional ideas.
Since you're located in Europe [I know this from previous emails with
Henrik!], you may want to think about attending one of the European Search
Marketing Expo (SMX) conferences, or one of the Search Engine Strategies
(SES) conferences that will be out there in 2008.
SMX will be in Munich in April. You can see their schedule here:
<http://m1e.net/c?72318496-WYa69G.pIk2U2%403040505-LtRGB.3Lq7WpA
SES will be in London in February and in
Hamburg in April. You can see their schedule here:
<http://m1e.net/c?72318496-BS6AUHJAye8Lo%403040506-jsOtsV.1GKTm2
I've spoken at some of the international conferences in the past, and I
really like them as they tend to be somewhat smaller than the US shows,
which suits me just fine!
Of course, if you'd like to take a trip to the US (and meet me) I'll be
speaking at SMX West in February. More details on that via my affiliate
link here: <http://m1e.net/c?72318496-QceuZUqKVbsyU%403040507-PJOM/M42grGus
~~~High Rankings In the News~~~
January has already been busy for me with a couple of different radio
interviews.
++eMarketing Talkshow++
On January 4th, I had a great chat with Cindy Turietta for her eMarketing
Talkshow. We talked about the upcoming High Rankings SEO training classes,
plus I provided listeners with my tips for diagnosing website problems,
among other topics. You can learn more about the show and grab the link to
it in our "In the News" section here:

++Recognized Expert++
Then while in the midst of a snowstorm (as my husband was shoveling it off
our roof!), I was interviewed by Bob Sommers for his Recognized Expert radio
show. We talked about 5 tactics for SEO success. You can grab that link in
our news section as well:

~~~Advisor Wrap-up~~~
That's all for today. January is off to a bang, and we're busy, busy, busy!
I'm looking forward to my trip to New Zealand in February for the Webstock
NZ conference, although I'm not looking forward to the amazingly long
flight. But I figure it can't be worse than it is in my head thinking about
it. At least I hope not!
On the way back from NZ I'll be spending some time in Honolulu with those in
my family who live there, which will break up the return trip a bit. In
fact, let me know if you live in the Honolulu area and perhaps we can have
an informal SEO/SEM meetup! I'll be there the week of Feb. 18. Then it's
off to Santa Clara for SMX West. Phew. I'm tired just thinking about all the
travel! I will be working of course during most of this trip, but mostly
because there's nothing else that I'd rather be doing! :)
Catch you next time! - Jill
